It is almost unbelievable how often you see leggings where it was once just a sea of denim jeans. Without a doubt, jeans are still the most classic and popular single piece of clothing that almost every person in the world owns at one least one pair if not many.
But, what’s not to love about leggings? They are so comfortable, stylish and go great with everything! That’s why we are sure the legging trend is a style that is here to stay.
SOME INTERESTING HISTORY ABOUT LEGGINGS
Even through leggings have become ultra-fashionable in the last 5-10 years, they have been a trend that has risen and fallen in women’s wardrobes since the 1950s when icons like Audrey Hepburn started wearing slim more form-fitting capris.
Then there was Lycra which was invented in 1958 and by 1959 the first spandex pants were made. Women in the ’60s took full advantage of enjoying these stretchy slacks. In the 1970s leggings took off with the likes of Debbie Harry and Olivia Newton-John wearing her iconic final costume in Grease.
Storming came the 80s and the legging craze continue when Madonna adopted them as one of her wardrobe staples, frequently wearing them on stage and infamously featuring them in her Like a Virgin video.
Following the 90s the legging trend started to cool down until the beginnings of the 2000s, where leggings were back with a vengeance, as the decade’s biggest It girls started wearing capri versions of the trend again, often under dresses and skirts.
Now at present day, with the rise of athleisure-loving It girls, leggings have replaced women pants for the most part. But leggings’ history doesn’t stop here.
We were surprised to discover that the origin of the trend dates way back to the 14th century, and men were actually the first to wear them!
14th-century men in Scotland were wearing iterations of the first recorded leggings made of leather or chainmail. This piece of clothing acted both as tactical military garb as well as every day wear. On to Renaissance times, men were still wearing leggings but during this time, they were made of much thicker materials. It wasn’t until the 19th century that women joined in on this look and then took it over.
WHAT IS MORE POPULAR, LEGGINGS OR JEANS?
Now we know that the legging style has been around for a very long time. For denim, its history is many hundred years old, but it wasn’t until the 1960s that wearing denim took hold and took off. Wearing jeans in the 1960s was more than just a fashion statement, it was a cultural statement of rebellion.
Jeans are functional, jeans are rugged but also, jeans can be dressed up. They are universally loved for their aesthetic and versatility. But, what about leggings?
These days there is one segment of consumers who are actively choosing leggings over denim, and that is young consumers. In 2015, a report on fashion trends was done by Google, which analyzed billions of searches where people were making style-themed inquiries. The study showed that jogger pants were the number one most searched for the clothing item.
The preference for comfort for both men and women is one of the strongest reasons for driving the trend. Wearing clothing that is casual and feels good every day makes soft and stretchy fabrics used in leggings so attractive.
Leggings come in many forms. From super sporty styles to more formal ones. They are styled with every garment imaginable and their comfort can only be match by its versatility. Wear them under a dress, with a tunic, or just a nice long shirt, and you are good to go!
Next to jeans, leggings can be perceived as a more sophisticated piece of clothing. If their style is formal enough. And if you want to be playful or bold, the sheer variety of designs and patterns available for leggings is overwhelming, and every fashionista's dream. Leggings can give you the opportunity to showcase your personality like few other garments can do.
There is something very hard to explain in how the right leggings empower us women to just get a hold on our lives in a confident way. Maybe leggings also carry a spirit of rebellion.
It is hard to say for certain that leggings are in a position to replace jeans. These two giants of fashion work very well together and continue evolving with the times.
It is most likely that these two will remain for many years to come both equally as popular as they are today in whatever style and form they take.
